Tales for Toys

Shani and Rod have set themselves this delightful challenge in building and developing a pilot episode of “Tales for Toys”. The basic idea behind “Tales for Toys” was to find away of effectually combining a sophisticated level of puppet engineering with 2d animated stories. This idea appealed to us because it would be a cost effective approach to producing an entertaining series for young children.

Sammy-jo is the puppet who, at night, tells imaginative stories to her teddy bear and dolly. The stories unfold in 2d animation where Sammy, her teddy and dolly are actively involved.

This project is still in development and it is going to be an ongoing process of change and discovering new ways of doing things.

A pneumatic cylinder (self machined) was used to achieve the eyelid movement as this approach gives a quicker response in comparison to a servo control. The movement of the piston in the cylinder is actuated by pressure and suction in the pneumatic line. Similar devises are used at Disney Studios to achieve rapid movements in their Audio-Animatronics.
